Curtis Cares Lopus Awareness

Anita Gardner, mother of Curtis Thompson, passionately established Curtis Cares in memory of her son, Curtis Dwayne Thompson, who tragically lost his battle with Lupus in October 2015. Moved by her own experience during Curtis’s eight-day struggle in the ICU, where she witnessed the importance of support and sustenance, Anita embarked on a mission to provide solace and aid to families enduring similar circumstances.

Since 2016, Curtis Cares has been a beacon of comfort in the Intensive Care Unit, offering snacks, beverages, prayers, and words of encouragement to both the dedicated hospital staff and the anxious families awaiting news about their loved ones. Anita, alongside her daughter Cheryl, has devoted themselves to extending the compassionate embrace of God to those in the throes of grief, inspired by their own journey of hardship and resilience.
Curtis Cares focuses on Lupus Awareness through:
  1. Health Education: lupus awareness program contributes to health
education efforts by raising awareness about the signs, symptoms, and impact of lupus on individuals and communities.
  2. Community Engagement and Support: Curtis Cares program provides support and resources for individuals affected by lupus, fostering a sense of community and solidarity.
  3. Intersectionality and Inclusivity: Lupus disproportionately affects certain demographic groups, including women, people of color, and individuals from low-income backgrounds.
  4. Health Equity and Access: Individuals living with lupus may face barriers to accessing healthcare and resources for managing their condition thus creating disparities in education and healthcare. We promote healthy equity and access to quality care.
  5. Collaboration and Partnerships: With healthcare providers, patient groups, and other organizations working in the field of lupus can enhance the effectiveness and reach of the awareness program.

Overall, these actions are essential elements to capacity-building and community development initiatives.

Civic Engagement Education
Civic engagement encompasses the active participation of individuals in the democratic process and community life to address public issues and improve society. This involvement can take many forms, including voting in elections, attending town hall meetings, volunteering for community projects, supporting public policy changes, and participating in public demonstrations. By engaging in these activities, citizens contribute to the collective decision-making process, hold public officials accountable, and foster a sense of community and shared responsibility.
